The McDonough Duals

The Christmas vacation was not a vacation for the Loyola Wrestling team. The Dons competed in the tough McDonough duals and went 5-3 over the two days. Getting off to a bumpy start the Dons took on the Mcdonough Eagles and stumbled to a 18-49 defeat. After that rough start the Dons gathered themselves and ran off three more wins over McLean (VA) 60-19, Washington (WVa) 63-6, and finally topped the MD 3A/4A defending state champions Old Mill 46-30.
The next day of the tournament began with an even tougher schedule. First up was Kellam of Virginia. They quickly showed why they were #3 in Virginia AAA as they beat the Dons 54-15. Following that dual were the eventually champions Spring Grove of Pennsylvania. That dual found Loyola on the short end of a 51-15 score. The tough part of the tournament over, Loyola went ahead and crushed Susquehannock (PA) 69-10, Brentsville (VA) 40-30, and concluded with a victory over the Scorpions of Oakland Mills 42-26.
The tournament ended with Loyola in 4th place having gone 6-3 over the two days. Full details are at the Mcdonough site here

Loyola vs Gilman. . .

With most schools closed because of snow one of the few wrestling matches in the metro area Tuesday was Loyola hosting A conference rival Gilman. The match started at 103 and Loyola ran off with the first few matches before Gilman went on a run of their own. By the upper weights though Loyola had righted the ship and with wins by Will Flynn, Gus Moreno and Matt Hnatiuk Loyola sealed the win 42-28. The Dons face McDonough and a few other tough teams next week in the third annual McDonough Duals.

The Big 20 Experience

This means that on the one hand we can bring more wrestlers and get some more team mat time, but it also means that what was once a pretty tough tournament with 20 teams is
now not so tough. Read More...
